Well the day has come where i missed the chance to buy one more Lem novel to add to the collection. It was there staring me in the face an i thought ‘I think I already have that one… I’ll make sure before i buy’.
And no i did not have it and it was a rare hard covered first edition of More Tales of Pirx the Pilot. Great 80′s style cover art, and pretty hard to find in the used book circuits. Might have to go to Amazon and hope they’re still in newer print around. Always go with my gut!
Getting close to having them all i think… only 3 left and one I’m not positive made to English translation. Almost there!

Just watched the movie surrogates the other day and while I was not expecting much but i have to say it was the worse sci-fi movie i’ve seen in a while. Not cause of the same old crappy sci-fi stuff they spewed out but the disappointing lack and use of a really good idea.
the whole plugging in to a robotic (or other means) body to represent the ‘you’ in society has been done in few books very well. two, which are my favorite, are Kiln People and Peace on Earth (a tichy adventure written by Lem, very good!). Peace on Earth even used robotic bodies similar to the movie.
But of course none of the good thing’s these books wrote about are in the movie at all. I was hoping to see at least a little structure on how this tech would impact society and culture. but basically all i saw was that everyone in the world just wants to look like ken and barbie. what the hell? even the ‘punks’ portrayed (only once) looked like stereotypical crap. i’ve been to show’s where punks are more elaborately dressed up without having a robot skull you could weld things too.
where was the antmen, the lizard men, the tentacle people with elephant heads? at least have a poke at the world of war craft crowd. there’s no way in hell you wouldn’t see some guy walking down the street decked out as an orc.
not that i was expecting that at all when i rented ($3.00 i’ll never get back) it. don’t even want to go into the ending that made no sense what so ever!

Went to the Pecha Kucha presentations the other night and had a great time. My friends who do Rollout custom wallpaper nailed their presentation. Another presentation that stood out was Sergio Toporek twist on spiritual / scientific directed art. Not some much into the spiritual stuff but quite the interesting perspectives in the flows and fractals of physics driven art.
It also could have been he worked in one of my favorite quotes (laws) by Arthur C. Clarke “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” Good talk and strange ideas! Heres another great quote (from Star Diaries) by my top author to read;
“The whole plan hinged upon the natural curiosity of potatoes.” – Lem.
As most plans always have in the past!

I say do yourself a favor and go see District 9! Opened today and I’m still nerding out about it. Still on a bit of a high but i’d say its the best thing to happen in many, many a year… Hooray!

ha ha! this is great! the many perspectives on the robot functionality. love the flair for the dramatic robot and the robot with the cool jetpack with no one to show it too… I’d be sad too if know one could see my jetpack.

Had some good book scores as of late. check out these two vintage covers; Lem’s Memoirs of a space traveler and Starburst. Lem’s is pour eighties goodness and about as bizarre as the stories within. Starburst is even older… got to love the retro rockets…
the biggest find however was Fiasco another rare Lem. Been looking for it a while know… some small book shop had a copy for $3. Ha think the guy didn’t really know what he had.
